We defend youHome health care for aging gay men.
Everything Ipanema does is a form of advocacy. The five service lines below are how that advocacy is delivered: in the home, at the bedside, in the exam room, on the phone with a carrier, and in the rooms where families decide what happens next.
A missed diagnosis is rarely a single failure. A delayed treatment is rarely one person's fault. Both happen in the gaps, and the gaps are where Ipanema works.
Care does not have to be permanent to be worth doing well. Hospital to Home, Ipanema's short-term recovery program, is described under Medical Home Health below.
Care is delivered in your home, on your schedule, in four-hour shifts with a weekly minimum of twelve hours, or as twenty-four-hour live-in coverage. Services are available throughout Marin County and Palm Springs. Care begins with a complimentary Care Planning Session.
Service line 01In-Home Care
The foundation of Ipanema's offer. A trained home health aide is present in your home, on a schedule that fits your life, delivering the kind of daily support that allows a person to remain in their own residence with dignity intact. Assistance with bathing, dressing, mobility, and personal care. Meal preparation. Light housekeeping that keeps a household functioning. Companionship that is professional, attentive, and steady.
Ipanema's home health aides are gay men from Brazil, trained in California-standard care delivery and selected for their craft, their warmth, and the cultural fluency that defines the Brazilian caregiving tradition. They are paid above market, housed during their relocation, and built into the company as long-term professionals rather than rotating staff.
- Four-hour minimum shifts
- Twelve-hour weekly minimum, or three shifts per week
- Twenty-four-hour live-in option available, one caregiver overnight
- Three-month minimum engagement, thirty days written notice to adjust or end
Service line 02Medical Home Health
Includes Hospital to Home, Ipanema's short-term program for recovery after surgery, a fall, or an unplanned admission. Detailed below.
Skilled clinical care delivered in your home, by registered nurses trained in the Filipino tradition and credentialed to California standards. Wound care. Post-operative recovery and surgical site management. Medication administration and oversight. IV therapy support. Care for chronic conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, and the long-term management of HIV. Coordination with your physicians, your specialists, and your Ipanema care team.
Medical Home Health is delivered under the clinical leadership of Ipanema's Director of Nursing. It is the answer to one of the most common questions an aging gay man asks himself, sometimes for years before he says it aloud: who will take care of me when the time comes.
Medical home health · Hospital to homeRecovery, held by a nurse who knows you.
Hospital to Home is Ipanema's program for the days and weeks after a surgery, a fall, or an unplanned admission. It is led by a registered nurse and delivered by the same small team from the first visit to the last. Before you leave the hospital, your nurse attends the discharge conversation, reconciles every medication against what is already in your cabinet, and walks your home to remove what will trip you and add what will steady you. On the day you return, your nurse is there.
In the days that follow, wound and incision care, pain and vital monitoring, mobility work, and coordination with your surgeon and physician happen in your own rooms, on your own schedule. Your caregiver handles meals, bathing, and the quiet company that makes the long afternoons shorter. Your advocate makes the calls you should not have to make. If your long-term care policy or Medicare benefit applies, we file it. If a family member is helping, we teach them.
This is short-term care by design. When the recovery is complete, the relationship continues on whatever terms you choose. Every Hospital to Home client is a member of Ipanema Circle at no cost.
One nurse. One team. One phone number. Designed for the life you have built.
California Home Care Organization and Home Health Agency licenses pending.
We defend · Service line 03Patient Advocacy
Aging well in the American medical system requires more than care. It requires someone in the room whose only job is you. Ipanema provides a member of the care team who attends every medical appointment, takes notes, asks the questions that should be asked, reads the record, and translates complex information into language that lets you and your family make real decisions.
The reason this matters is specific. Missed diagnoses and delayed treatment are two of the most common ways an aging person's health turns catastrophic, and both happen in the spaces between: between one specialist and another, between a symptom mentioned and a chart updated, between a discharge order and a household that is not ready to receive it. Patient Advocacy is the work of closing those spaces before they cost something.
- Attendance at every medical appointment, with notes and follow-up
- Medical records gathered, reviewed, and held in one place
- Second opinions and specialist referrals, coordinated and pursued
- Treatment decision support, so a choice is understood before it is made
- Hospital admission and presence at the bedside
- Discharge planning and the transition home
- Emergency and crisis response
- Billing disputes and denied claims, challenged on your behalf
- Communication with family, on your terms and at your direction
- Advance directives, POLST, and navigation of palliative and end-of-life care
For a man without an adult child to do this work, or without a partner who can carry it, Patient Advocacy is the difference between care delivered to you and care delivered around you. It is the part of the offer that is hardest to see until it is needed, and the part that most often determines how the rest of it goes.
We teach · Service line 05Family Education
Aging does not happen only to one person. It happens to a circle of people. Family Education is Ipanema's ongoing series on aging well and brain health, delivered by Marlon McWilliams, PsyD, and included with care. The sessions are designed for partners, chosen family, biological family, and the friends who have been doing the work without a framework.
Topics include the science of cognitive aging, the warning signs of decline, how to have hard conversations about driving and independence, the brain health practices that move the needle, what dementia looks like in its early stages, how to be present without being intrusive, and how to take care of yourself while caring for someone you love. The series is open to the public, not only to clients of Ipanema Life. It is one of the ways Ipanema gives back to the communities it serves.
